What is the schedule for the Tokyo Metropolitan Area portion of the relay?
From July 10th (Friday) to July 24th (Friday), 2020. For details please see [Application Instructions] on our homepage.
What will the relay be run and what will the course be like?
Each TB will run approximately 200 meters. (Please note that the running distance may exceed more than 200 meters or less. TBs may run at their own speedand at a relaxed pace.)
Specific time and date as well as route will be determined by the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee following nomination of the TBs.
Please note in advance that there is the possibility you may be assigned to run in a municipality/location other than the municipality you hope to run in.
If Iʼm selected as a Torchbearer is it possible for my spouse run with me?
It is not possible. However, if you have difficulty running on your own it is possible to designate one person as a helper.
Regarding the selection process:
What method is used for the selection process?
The Tokyo Metropolitan Area Olympic Torch Relay Executive Committee bases the selection process on the information provided by the applicant. It then makes candidate referrals to the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, which makes the final selection.
What are the selection criteria?
We will make the selection from a wide range of fields, while considering the balance of factors such as nationality, the presence or absence of a disability, gender, and age among those individuals actively involved in the respective areas where the Olympic Torch Relay will be held.
How will the selections be announced?
On or after December of 2019 the Tokyo Metropolitan Area Olympic Torch Relay Executive Committee will announce the selection. Thereafter the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee will send formal notice to those candidates who were selected which will take precedence over the prior public announcement.
*Specific running locations will be given to selected candidates on or after mid-February 2020 by the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee.
*There will be no special announcement made to those candidates not selected. However, if there are unfilled spots two weeks prior to the day of running, alternates may be selected. Selected alternates will be contacted by the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee.
How will successful candidates be notified of their selection?
Successful candidates will be contacted vie the e-mail address they submitted on their application.
What if my e-mail address has changed since I submitted my application?
If you mad an error entering your-email address, it has been changed, or no longer exists and the selection notice cannot be delivered you may be disqualified. When applying be sure to use an e-mail address where you will definitely be able to be reached.
Will you contact candidates that are not selected? Also, will you give the reason for rejection?
Rejected candidates will receive no notification. Also, the reasons for selection or rejection will not be disclosed. Please be aware that enquires regarding the reason for rejection will also not be answered.
Regarding the post-selection process:
What kind of clothing will Torchbearers wear?
Olympic Torchbearers (TBs) will be provided with the oﬃcial TB uniform while running their leg of the relay,which will consist of a shirt (short- or long-sleeved), pants (long or short). Shirts or pants other than the oﬃcial uniform may not be worn or carried. For other details please consult the overview.
Will anything be sent to the candidates after they are selected?
If there are any materials to be sent in advance of the relay, they will be sent as an attachment to the e-mail address entered on the application form or by post.
What if I can’t speak Japanese very well? Is there support for other languages?
All communications prior to the relay will be sent to selected Torchbearers in Japanese or English only.
Is there a participation fee or other charge?
Participation is free, but the cost of round-trip transportation (including lodging if required) to the location of their leg of the relay will be covered by the Torchbearer at their own expense. If for any unforeseen reason the relay is cancelled or cannot be run on the appointed day no compensation or repayment will be made.
Is there anything that I need to bring on the day of the relay?

Will there be any special procedures or formalities on the day of the relay?

Is it possible that I won’t get the chance to run on the day of the relay?
If it is determined that there were falsehoods or fraudulent statements made in your application the selection will be withdrawn. Also, if it is determined that you do not meet the entry requirements to be a Torchbearer (TB), your behavior is determined to be harmful to the image of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, or the Organizing Committee ﬁnds you unsuitable to be a TB for some other reason your selection may be withdrawn.
What happens if I am injured on the day of the relay?
On the day of the relay, if a Torch Bearer is injured or becomes ill, necessary measures sch as the provision of first aid, or emergency hospitalization will be taken as required. In such cases we may request information on the Torch Bearer’s medical condition from the medical facility providing treatment.
Is it possible to designate a substitute if I become unable to participate after being selected?
It is not possible for anyone to participate in the place of a selected candidate. If you become unable to participate for some reason after being selected as a Torchbearer, please contact the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee. Speciﬁc details will be provided to candidates after selection.

How is personal information handled?
When applying to be a Torchbearer the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee as well as the Tokyo Metropolitan Area
Olympic Torch Relay Executive Committee will each handle personal information in accordance with their respective privacy policies. In order to prevent events such as leaks or loss of information both Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee as well as the Tokyo Metropolitan Area Olympic Torch Relay Executive Committee will take measures to maintain restricted access data storage facilities and prevent events such as unauthorized outside access to maintain personal data securely. Furthermore, we acknowledge the importance of personal information, and will act in accordance with all laws and ordinances related to personal data privacy protection.
Will the personal information I provide in my application be shared with 3rd parties?
Personal information submitted during the Torchbearer application process as well as other personal data gathered
Will the self-recommendation and 2nd party recommendation information provided in the Torchbearer application be shared with 3rd parties?

Is it possible to purchase one of the torches used on the day of the Olympic Torch Relay?
It is possible for Torchbearers (TBs) participating in the Olympic Torch Relay to purchase torches carried in the relay. The purchase price and method of purchase will be provided separately to TBs after selection.
